I don’t even know where to start, most of the time I just shake my head in disgust. I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that more than half of our foods are poisoned or the fact that the lawmakers are allowing companies such as Monsanto the right to keep it from us. What about the fact that half the people that I speak to still don’t know what GMO’s are?
GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. Companies such as Monsanto, are creating mutant food that makes its own pesticide and is easier to grow… sounds great, right??? WRONG. These foods are known to cause fertility issues as well as a host of other problems.
“Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can
lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors,
infertility and birth defects” -March Against Monsanto blog- Why do We March?
Most other countries have banned or placed strict guidelines on GMO’s, but not the US, here we pay these companies big bucks to manufacture this crap. Our government is more concerned with protecting this large and dangerous company than it is in protecting its people. Late May 2013 a law was passed that protects Monsanto, despite the scary language of the bill.
“Deep within the nearly 600-page spending bill, Section 735 includes language that
lets biotech companies that experiment with genetically-engineered and genetically
modified crops test and sell lab-made products even if legal action is taken against them.”
-RT.com – Monsanto Protection Act’ might be repealed in Senate
This means that even if the court system rules that environmental studies for safety on a crop were inadequate the United States Department of Agriculture will approve the harvest and sale of the crops from the genetically modified seeds anyway. In plain language that means even if it is proven that these crops are unsafe, the USDA will approve them anyway. What, really? What the heck is next?
Several senators who passed the bill have been paid handsomely by Monsanto to do so. Senator Roy Blount a Republican of Missouri, who reportedly worked with the giant company to craft the language that was included in the provision, received $64,250 from Monsanto paid to his campaign committee between 2008 and 2012.
That’s not all, according to Wenona Hauter of Food and Water Watch, “in the last decade, biotech firms spent $272 million on lobbying and campaign contributions in the nation’s capital, adding that these firms, including Monsanto, have actually hired 300 former staffers from the White House and Congress and 13 former members of Congress” as quoted by an article on Take Part.com – What’s Next for the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’?
Now don’t you feel safer about the government making out decisions about GMO’s? They are making money on the backs of the people in this country without any regard for human life. Reminds me of lyrics from one of my favorite songs, “Head Like a Hole” by Nine Inch Nails.
God money’s not looking for the cure.
God money’s not concerned with the sick amongst the poor.
God money let’s go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money’s not one to choose
Sounds about right, huh?
Not only this but the law was passed quietly while we were all worried instead about the collapse of our government.
The CEO of Monsanto seems to believe that we are only against Monsanto because we don’t understand it, and because we are being reverse elitist .
“Most of the people that become motivated to engage the political issues have
become convinced that going down the road of genetically engineered foods is not
the way to meet the needs of a food insecure population,” Grant said. “There is space
in the supermarket shelf for all of us.”
– Hugh Grant, CEO of Monsanto on Bloomberg
Um. NO. That’s not the case. Especially since they want to be the ONLY food on supermarket shelves and they don’t want to give anyone a choice about it.
It used to be that you could feel safe shopping at stores like Whole Foods and buying from companies like Stoneybrook Farms, who have, up until recently, said they would not purchase, sell or support any genetically modified foods, but you can’t even do that anymore. These companies believe the fight on GMO’s is lost and are now looking to “co-exist” with Monsanto and other biotech companies. According to wewillblowyourmind.com, the USDA Forces Whole Foods to Accept Monsanto.
Natural does not mean natural. The only way you can be sure (at least for now) that you are not eating GMO’s is to by 100% Certified Organic foods which can get mighty pricey. Organic food is not always easy to find either. I have to drive 40mins to get to any store that sells organic meat. It is also ridiculous how much time I have to invest in learning what companies support GMO labeling bans and which have stated that they will not use any GMO’s in their products.
Many companies are now part of the Non GMO Act and use this logo to symbolize their commitment to not using any GMO products.
Which leads me to the biggest concern about GMO’s. Choice aside, GMO’s are destroying our planet. They are the leading cause of the death of pollinating bees world-wide. We’ve know about this for years. This article was written in 2008. Death of the Bees.
Genetically Modified Crops and the Decline of Bee Colonies in North America- Global Research
The death of these bees is in direct correlation to death of the human race.
“leaked documents seen by the Guardian show that Canada wants all
governments to accept the testing and commercialization of “Terminator”
crop varieties. These seeds are genetically engineered to produce only infertile
seeds, which farmers cannot replant, also to mention that the bees that are
trying to collect pollen, found to have their digestive tract diseases, such as
amoeba and nosema disease”12. These diseases are mainly located in the
digestive tract system. After studies of the autopsy, the most alarming trait is
that the lower intestine and stinger have discolored to black vs. the normal
opaque color, Synominus with colon cancer in humans.”
If all the bees die, we will follow soon behind.
